2007 Match Play Championship
The 11th Annual TBI Match Play Championship will be
contested this summer on golf courses across Western Washington.
Inspired by the increased popularity of match play golf reflected by
the Ryder Cup and the PGA Tour’s Accenture Match Play
Championship, the TBI tournament has grown from the inaugural
eight-man field to a full field event. Thirty-two slots are
available to golfers with USGA approved handicaps.
For the TBI Match Play Championship, players are grouped into
regions consisting typically of four players. Each player plays three matches, one against each other
player in his region. The matches are scheduled by the participants
themselves, at courses and times of their choosing. Players need not
play in a foursome with all members of their regions (although it is
fun that way). When this “round robin” phase is complete, the
top two players from each region advance to the single elimination
playoffs.
Individual matches are contested at match play, with handicap
adjustments in effect. In this format, each hole is worth one point.
The lowest net score on a given hole earns the point. In case of a
tie, no point is awarded. When one player is ahead by more points
than holes remain, the match is over and that player is the winner.
This format breeds excitement, since each hole is a mini-contest of
its own!
The TBI Match Play Championship has featured many exciting moments
during its seven-year history: In the 2000 Finals, Randy Hagen
defeated Dave Sisler in sudden death at Port Ludlow Golf Resort’s
Trail Nine. In 2001, Chris Caron outdeuled Shawn Tovey in the
Final match at the TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach,
Florida. In 2002, the preceding two year's runners up met in
the final, in which Dave Sisler defeated Shawn Tovey 5&3 at Elk
Run. In 2003, Chris Caron won his second Match Play title
in three years, edging Dorothea Fitzsimmons 2&1 at Druid's Glen
Golf Course. In 2004, Randy Hagen drained a 40 foot par putt on the 18th
green to defeat Mike Fitzsimmons 1up. In 2006, Mike Fitzsimmons returned
to the Finals and defeated Steve Onustack handily with a 6&5 victory. Last
year, Dodie Fitzsimmons defeated husband Mike to win the title.
