Dodie Fitzsimmons defeated
husband (and defending champion) Mike Fitzsimmons 3&2 at Meridian Valley
Country Club to win the 2006 TBI Match Play Championship.
Dodie used impeccable driving and a solid short game to capture the title.
Perfect tee shots on the first two holes gave her a 2-up lead. She carried
this lead into the back nine.
After a par at #11, Mike had fought back to 1-down, and was thinking he had
a chance. Dodie won #13 to go back to 2-up, but found a greenside bunker on
#14 with Mike on the green and 15 feet from a par. In the shot of the match,
Dodie blasted out of the bunker to within a foot to save bogie, and watched
as Mike three putted to give her a 3-up lead.
Mike won #15. On 16, Mike found the greenside bunker, and couldn’t
duplicate Dodie’s saving sand shot. Dodie won the hole and the match.
Mick Tovey and John Cotton tied for 3rd place. Mike eliminated
Mick and a balky putter at Druids Glen with a 1-up victory.
Dodie defeated John Cotton at Maplewood Golf Course with a 4&2
victory.
Other notable matches included Dodie defeating Bert in the quaterfinals at
Druids Glen with another solid display of chipping and putting. John Cotton
was victorious over Mike Anderson 4&3 at West Seattle Golf Course. Bert
Dewell edged Steve Onustack 1-up at Jefferson GC.
Congratulations to Dodie Fitzsimmons, 2006 TBI Match Play Champion.
