Home Cooking Helps Fitzsimmons To Match Play Title

Mike Fitzsimmons won three straight matches at Meridian Valley Country Club to    capture the 2005 TBI Match Play Championship. After finishing second a year ago, Mike displayed awesome control of his game from tee to green, keeping the ball in play and repeatedly sinking clutch putts. Steve Onustack finished second this year, while Larry Staberg and Dodie Fitzsimmons tied for third.
The final match opened in style as the first hole was halved with each player making a natural birdie. It remained tight as the weather held firm. Beginning at the toughest hole on the course, the par 4 fifth,  Mike ran off a string of five straight winning holes to take a 4-up lead at the turn. This lead proved to be enough and, as the weather worsened, Mike closed out a 6&5 victory.
In the semifinal match against Larry Staberg, both competitors turned in amazing rounds, both recording birdies on the front nine. Again, a strong start proved pivotal, as Mike made the turn 5-up, en route to an amazing 84. This match also finished at Meridian Valley’s 13th hole, with Mike carding a 6&5 victory. Larry has “some serious class”, said Mike.
Steve Onustack and Dodie Fitzsimmons squared off in the other semifinal match at Trilogy Golf Club in Redmond. Dodie won three of the last four holes on the front nine to take a 3-up lead at the turn. However, Steve exploded with a back nine 38, edging the competitive Dodie at the last hole for a 2-up victory.
The quarterfinals were closely contested as all matches went to at least the 17th hole. Steve defeated Shawn Tovey 1up at MeadowPark as Shawn missed a short putt at the 18th after the players exchanged natural birdies at the 16th. Mike defeated Mick Tovey 2up at Meridian Valley in a match that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Dodie eliminated defending champion Randy Hagen 2&1 at Meridian Valley after trailing early. Larry defeated John Solis 2&1 at Kahler Glen Golf Course by making up a back nine deficit of 2 down with four to play.

This year’s tournament was changed to single elimination after two participants withdrew with season ending injuries. Matches already completed were used for seeding. A similar format is being considered to expedite next year’s tournament.
