Birdie Binge Ends Masters
Suspense
Lance Takehara, Vince Van Parys, Mike Tovey and grandson Michael Tovey birdied the final six holes to win the 2007 Washington Masters. On a mild but overcast day, scores were varied, but the winner’s 65 (-6) was good for a one stroke victory over the team of Pat Gleason, Mark Tovey, Phil Wilson and Marci Solis.
Following a bogey at #9, the eventual winners were even par and trailed the leaders by three strokes. They then reeled off birdies on holes 10 through 15 including a couple of long putts, to storm into the lead. The runners-up had no bogeys on their card, but could not generate enough birdies to chase down the winners. At 67 (-4), the team of Dick Thompson, Lynn Bottoms, Bobby Erwin and Dan Marshall tied for third with Chris Tovey, Chris Hermsen, Don Hermsen and Daniel Smith. Dodie Fitzsimmons, Mike Wineland, Troy Scheumann and Jim Kelley recorded an eagle at #16, but this was countered by a double bogey at #13. They finished at 69.
Chris Tovey, Chris Hermsen, Don Hermsen and Daniel Smith won the Pink Ball Challenge with a record tying score of 82. Pink ball scores were unusually low this year as seven teams broke 90 and all but six pink balls were returned. The winners made eight pars and edged the team of Lance Takehara, Vince Van Parys, Mike Tovey and Michael Tovey by three strokes. Another stroke back was Mick Tovey, Pam Davis, Gary Crawford and Baron Miller.
Long Drive honors on Hole #8 this year went to Jim Kelley. Masters rookie Stacy DeNoyer captured Long Drive for women at #10. Bobby Erwin won Closest to the pin at #2 and Vince Van Parys was closest at #6. Mick Tovey was 5'7" away at #12, edging Pat Gleason by less than an inch. Baron Miller hit the pink ball to within 4 feet on #17.
