Mark
Tovey Wins TBI Club Championship
Mark Tovey captured the TBI
Club Championship by a whopping 7 strokes at MeadowPark Golf Course in Tacoma.
This was the largest margin of victory in club history. Dave Schmidt won Low Gross with an 89, one stroke better than a pair of
contenders.
Mark started unevenly with a triple bogey on the first hole, but righted
himself to record par or better on seven of the next twelve holes. A big
number at the diabolical 14th hole seemed to derail his chances,
but no one else was even close. Mark was the only player to break par with a
66. Defending champion Mick Tovey recorded
two birdies, but finished a distant second with a 73.
While there was no competition for Low Net, the battle for Low Gross was very
tight. Five golfers were within two strokes of Dave’s 89. Rick Berg birdied
16 to climb into contention, but finished a stroke back, tied with Mark Tovey
at 90, who parred the last two holes. Shawn Tovey and Troy Hager were another
stroke behind at 91. Shawn and Troy were both two over par on the last two
holes.
The event was marked by the inaugural appearance of Conner and Chase Tovey,
the tournament’s youngest competitors. The young Toveys were awarded “Baby
Dollars” by SLGL Secretery John Solis at the awards ceremony.
Dave Schmidt won Closest to the Pin on the 4th hole and Mark Tovey
was closest on #8. Mick Tovey won boith back nine KP’s on #13 and #17. Dave
Schmidt (#16) and Lisa Myers (#11) captured Long Drive honors.
Congratulations to Mark Tovey and Dave Schmidt, TBI Club Champions for 2006.
