Champions
Steve Denton and Rick Berg repeated their 2003 accomplishments as TBI Club
Champions with excellent rounds at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf
Complex. Steve shot a seven under par net 65 to outdistance a pair of
challengers by two strokes. Rick outdueled Steve Onustack to win Low Gross by
one shot with an 83.
Steve’s front nine 44 featured pars on three of the first four holes. This
fast start was mirrored by an equally impressive finish as he recovered from a
triple bogey at the 14th to finish with four straight fours. Steve
Onustack was in contention for both Low Gross and Low Net before a triple
bogey at the 17th dropped him into second place in both categories.
Mick Tovey birdied the last hole to finish tied with Steve at net 67,
and captured 2nd Place by virtue of that birdie in the tiebreaker.
Rick Berg played steady golf, with only a single double bogey on his card.
This consistent game earned him the Low Gross Championship for the second
straight year. Playing in the same group, Steve Onustack matched consistency
with Rick until that triple at the 17th dropped him a stroke behind.
The shot of the day belonged to Tom Birmingham, who holed out a 110 yard
pitching wedge on #18 for an eagle. That shot was the first eagle made in TBI
Club Championship history and vaulted Tom into 4th Place.
Rick Berg won Closest to the Pin on the 5th hole and Bert Dewell ws
closest on #8. Tom Birmingham hit one to within 8 feet on #12 and Steve
Onustack was Closest to the Pin on the 16th. Steve Denton won Long
Drive at #13th.
Congratulations to Steve
Denton and Rick Berg, TBI Club Champions for 2004.
