Championship
Steve Denton shot a one over par net 72 to win the 2003 TBI
Club Championship at Meadow Park Golf Course. Rick Berg captured the Low Gross
Club Championship with an 86. Beautiful weather was not enough to bring scores
down as Steve’s total was the second highest winning score in TBI Club
Championship history.
Steve shot a 44 on the front nine and survived Meadow Park’s treacherous
back nine to win by two strokes over defending champion John Solis. Steve
birdied #5 with an approach shot to 3 feet, and rode that wave of adrenaline
to post the second best gross front nine score of the day.
Bert Dewell and Shawn Tovey
were in the hunt after making the turn in 47, but could make up no ground on
the back nine. A big number at the 10th hole ended Bert’s
chances, while a quadruple bogey on number 12 (the “Cowbell” hole) took
Shawn out of contention.
Rick Berg was the only player
to break 90, riding a birdie 2 on the 8th hole to an impressive 40
on the front nine. Rick was also the only player to break 50 on the back nine.
Dave Schmidt won Closest to
the Pin on the 4th hole. Rick Berg captured KP on #17. Shawn Tovey
won KP on #8 and also secured long drive honors at the 16th hole.
Congratulations to Steve
Denton and Rick Berg, TBI Club Champions for 2003.
