John Solis Wins
TBI Club Championship!
The Inaugural TBI Club Championship was
contested at Meadow Park Golf Course in Lakewood on September 23,
2000. At the end of this beautiful fall day, John Solis was crowned
TBI Club Champion with a slim one-stroke Low Net victory over Bert
Dewell. Low Gross honors went to Bert in the TBI Club Division, and
guest Norm Gehring, who shot a sparkling 83.
John overcame errant tee shots on Meadow Park's signature ravine
holes (13 and 14), and rallied with pars on the last two holes. On
the par-four 18th, Solis drained a 35-footer for par, which proved
to be the winning putt.
Scores were high on this challenging day at Meadow Park, as the
greens were tough and the course's narrow fairway seemed even more
claustrophobic from the Championship tees. John's winning net score
was three over par. Bert Dewell finished a stroke back, while Shawn Tovey was third, five strokes behind.
Bert and Shawn finished in a tie for Low Gross (TBI Club Division)
with identical front and back nine totals. Bert won the tie-breaker
to capture the Low Gross prize.
Steve Stoyles captured Closest to the Pin on both back nine
par-three holes, while Mick Tovey and Mark Steiner won the prize on
the front nine par threes. Shawn Tovey powered past the field to win
Long Drive on the 16th hole.
