The TBI Best Ball Championship is a two man best ball competition,
played with full handicap adjustments in effect. Teams consist of
two players. Each player plays his own ball from tee to green, and
records a score including any handicap strokes the player is due on
the given hole. The best score from the two players is chosen as the
team’s score for that hole. The pair with the lowest score after
the round is declared the winner.
This will be the ninth year at Lake Spanaway Golf Course, a fine venue in Spanaway,
south of Tacoma. Last year, John Solis and Dave Schmidt obliterated the field
with a tournament record 58. Two years ago, Chris Hermsen and Cory Hermsen won the tournament
going away with a net 63. In 2004, John Solis and Mark Tovey shot a back
nine 28 to capture the title. In 2003, Rick Berg and Tom Birmingham won the
tournament by two strokes with an eleven under par 60. In 2002, Dan Bauer and Chris Hermsen
posted a 12 under par 59. Chris and Dan eagled #9 as
Chris made a natural birdie to post a front nine 30. They did not
falter and closed with a 29 coming in, including five straight
birdies.
In 2001, the tournament was decided in a
scorecard playoff when Carvin Wilson and Steve Stoyles, playing in
their first TBI Best Ball Championship, defeated Shawn Tovey and
Brian Palosi in a scorecard playoff to capture the 2001 TBI Best
Ball title. Both teams finished at nine under par 62, but Carvin and
Steve won on the first playoff hole with a net eagle.
TBI Golf
Club members Brian Palosi and Shawn Tovey shot a nine under 62 and
captured the 2000 TBI Best Ball Championship. The pair was sparked by
a net double eagle on the par 5 ninth when Brian Palosi holed out a
7-iron from 150 yards for a natural eagle. This was easily the shot
of the tournament, and proved key as Brian and Shawn edged a trio of
contenders by a single stroke.
The 1999 tournament was run with 4-person teams, two pairs each turning in a
best ball score. The team of Ed Stone, Paul Broten, Mike Tovey, and
Shawn Tovey captured First Place in the tournament with a scorching
best ball total of 127 (-15). The
twosome of Ed Stone and father-in-law Paul Broten set the pace with
an eight under 63. Partners Mike Tovey and son Shawn turned the
front nine in 31 and withstood a back nine bogey to register the
day’s second best twosome score, a seven under 64. This one-two
punch was enough to blow away the field by five strokes.
