John Solis and Mark Tovey shot a tournament record
28 on the back nine at Lake Spanaway Golf Course to win the 2004 TBI Best Ball
Championship. John and Mark finished with an eleven under 60 to capture the
title by two strokes over Shawn Tovey and Steve Skibbs (-9).
After making the turn in 32 (-4), John and Mark were seven under
on their last seven holes to outdistance the field. A natural birdie by John
on the par-five 13th yielded a net eagle and was the centerpiece of
an amazing run of six under par in five holes.
Steve Skibbs and Shawn Tovey birdied the first three holes, and added birdies
on 6, 7 and 8 to take the lead at the turn with a front nine 30. However,
after opening the back nine with two straight birdies to reach -8, they could
fashion only one more birdie at 16, which left them two strokes off the pace.
Tied for third at 64 (-7) were Bert Dewell/Dave Schmidt and Brian Tovey/Randy
Hagen. Playing with the winners, Bert and Dave were tied with Mark and John
going into the pivotal 13th, but their bogey resulted in a three
shot swing when John made eagle and left them out of contention. Brian and
Randy were even par after 11 holes, but finished with two net eagles coming in
(#16 and #18) and played the last eight holes in seven under par.
Steve Skibbs won Closest to the Pin on #3. Mark Tovey hit it to within 6’ on
#6. Shawn Tovey won KP on number 14. Chris Tovey was closest to on the 17th.
John Solis captured long drive honors on #16, and commemorated the
occasion by having the entire field sign the winning placard.
Shawn Tovey edged Rick Berg for Low Gross with an 83. Other fine rounds were
turned in by Rick Berg (84), Bert Dewell (87), Mark Tovey (88) and Steve
Skibbs (89).
