Best Ball
Rookies Foil Repeat Hopes
Carvin Wilson and Steve Stoyles, playing in
their first TBI Best Ball Championship, defeated Shawn Tovey and
Brian Palosi in a scorecard playoff to capture the 2001 TBI Best
Ball title. Both teams finished at nine under par 62, but Carvin and
Steve won on the first playoff hole with a net eagle.
The victors shot 31-31 and closed with a birdie at the 18th.
Shawn and Brian also birdied 18, and closed with three
consecutive threes. In fact, Shawn and Brian had nothing higher than
4 on their scorecard.
Finishing a stroke back for the second consecutive year was Mike
Tovey and Steve Skibbs. After a first hole bogey, Mike and Steve
played steady and got to 8 after the 17th. A par on 18
kept them out of the playoff. Kevin Denton and Steve Denton scorched the front nine with a 30,
including four consecutive birdies to close out the nine. After an
eagle at 12 and a birdie at 13, they were nine under, but bogeys on
three of the last four holes dropped them from contention. Chris Tovey and Ryan Stowers had a front nine 31 (powered by a
spectacular net eagle at 5 when Chris landed a 200 yard third shot 3
feet from the pin), but fell back to even after a bogey-triple
bogey-bogey stretch to start the back nine. Making the opposite move
was Rick Berg and Marci Solis, who struggled to a front nine 41, but
then turned in an awesome back nine of 29, which featured three net
eagles by Marci (including net ones on both par threes).
Mike Tovey won Closest to the Pin on #3. Lance Takehara hit his shot
to within 8 10 on #6 to win the prize on that hole. Todd
Anderson was closest to on the short 14th, and Mick Tovey
won KP on #17. Kelly Yoshida outdrove the field on #16 to win long
drive honors.
Low Gross went to Kelly Yoshida with a 79. Other fine rounds were
turned in by Chris Rinkenberger with an 82, Steve Stoyles (84),
Kevin Denton (84), Steve Skibbs (86), and Carvin Wilson (86).
