Double Eagle
Sends Victors Soaring
TBI Golf Club members Brian
Palosi and Shawn Tovey shot a nine under 62 and captured the second
annual TBI Best Ball Championship at Lake Spanaway Golf Course in
Tacoma on June 24th. The pair was sparked by a net double eagle on
the par 5 ninth when Brian Palosi holed out a 7-iron from 150 yards
for a natural eagle. This was easily the shot of the tournament, and
proved key as Brian and Shawn edged a trio of contenders by a single
stroke. The shot punctuated an up and down front nine of 30 for the
victors.
Mike and Dorothea Fitzsimmons birdied the
first four holes, and six of the first seven. They turned the front
nine in 30 and recorded no bogeys to finish a stroke back at eight
under 63. Mick Tovey/Mark Steiner reeled off seven consecutive
birdies beginning on the 4th hole, and also shot a 30 on
the front nine. However, a bogey at 15 derailed their chances. After
an even par 36 on the front nine, Mike Tovey/Steve Skibbs scorched
the back nine with a 27, featuring three net eagles (natural birdies
by Mike on 11 and 14, and Steve on 18). Mike's birdie on 14 yielded
a net "1".
Kelly Yoshida
won closest to the pin on the par-3 third hole.
Chris Tovey captured the prize on #6, Mike Tovey hit one to
within 5 feet on #14, and Kevin Denton was closest on #17. Long
Drive on #16 went to John Krueger.
Kevin Denton and Shawn Tovey shared the
Individual Low Gross prize with 82, narrowly edging out Kelly
Yoshida by a stroke.
Early rain
showers cleared off to very warm afternoon temperatures, which
allowed the golfers an excellent view of the nearby McChord AFB air
show, featuring a B-2 stealth bomber flyby and F-15 Eagle fighters.
However, the most impressive eagle landed on the ninth green,
courtesy of Brian Palosi, and clinched the 2000 TBI Best Ball
Championship.
