Scores were high at the 2005 Washington Masters Golf Tournament this year. Steve Onustack, Bert Dewell, Mark Steiner and Cameron Steiner won the 2005 Washington Masters Golf Tournament with a 1 under 71 at McCormick Woods Golf Course. This marks the highest score ever for the scramble portion of the tournament.
The winners finished with four birdies and three bogeys, receiving timely shots at opportune moments throughout the round. Even par after 11 holes, a birdie at #5 (their 12th) provided the winning margin. Steve Onustack also provided a clutch shot, hitting the green at the par 3 seventh after his partners had all missed the putting surface.
Finishing one stroke back was the team of Lance Takehara, Lynn Bottoms, Mick Tovey and Michael Tovey. After getting to one-under par when young Michael chipped in for birdie at their 2nd hole (#11), they could not convert four short birdie putts on the finishing nine. A bogey at #4 (their 12th) dropped them to second place.
Equally frustrated was the team of Dodie Fitzsimmons, Steve Denton, Mark Tovey and John O’Connor. With five birdies but six bogeys, they finished at one over par. After 15 holes, this team was also one under, but bogeyed two of their last three holes to finish third.
The team of Shawn Tovey, Tom Howard, Gary Crawford and Larry Day had one of the more interesting rounds of the day, finishing with three birdies and an eagle offset by seven bogeys and a double bogey. This roller coaster ride landed them at +5, but only six strokes off the pace.
Although scoring was difficult for the scramble teams, the Pink Ball scores were more typical. The team of Matt Sandmeyer, John Ledeboer, Scott Wood and Neil Tastad returned both balls and won the Pink Ball Championship with an 86. In fact, seven pink balls were returned this year, more than doubling last years output. The champions made six pink ball pars, including all four par threes and three birdies in a row on holes 7, 8, and 9. The nearest competitors were six strokes back.
Long Drive honors on Hole #2 this year went to Dan Bauer. Jeff Richards captured Closest to the Pin at #4. His shot finished 4’ 4” from the hole. Gary Crawford hit it to within a foot at number 7. Steve Onustack was closest to the pin at #11. Pat O’Brien captured KP at number 17 with a tee shot to 4’ 7”.
