Kevin Denton, Steve Denton, Dan Marshall, and Joe Schornak captured the 2004 Washington Masters Golf Tournament with a 5 under 67 at McCormick Woods Golf Course. The winners opened with birdies on two of the first three holes and never looked back. "It was a team effort", reported Long Drive winner Kevin Denton.
The most beautiful weather in Washington Masters history greeted the 56 players at 7:45am as the shotgun start began. The winners rode Kevin's Longest Drive on their first hole (the narrow par five #2) to an opening birdie. They also birdied both front nine par threes, and got to five under par by their 11th hole. A lone bogey at the 14th was offset by an easy birdie at 18.
Two teams finished one stroke behind at
-4. Noel Martin, Randy Hagen, Mike Tovey and Brent Haugen had an up and down round, making
seven birdies and three bogeys. After three consecutive back nine birdies (hole 2,3 and
4), they were unable to tie the score and finished with four straight pars. Pat Gleason,
Steve Mundell, Mike Fitzsimmons and Phil Wilson also started strong, and reached five
under par after 13 holes. However, a bogey at #1 (their 14th hole) ended their chances.
The team of Mike Oberg, Joe Bianchi, Troy Oberg and Lance Bickert won the Pink Ball
Challenge with an 85. Only three pink balls were returned this year as the narrow fairways
at McCormick Woods took their toll. No other team was within 9 shots of the Pink Ball
champions, whose scorecard included 7 pars and a "pink birdie" at the par-3
17th. Although they walked away with the PBC crown, the champions sealed their win by
playing the last five holes in even par.
Kevin Denton captured Long Drive honors this year at the 2nd hole. Dorothea Fitzsimmons won Women's Long Drive on #13. Dan Marshall won Closest to the Pin at #4. Michael Tovey was Closest at number 7, the second year in a row that the tournament's youngest member secured a KP. Brent Haugen won the prize at #11. Lance Bickert hit his tee shot to within 43" at number 17, nailing a birdie with the pink ball for the eventual PBC winners.
