Chris Tovey nailed a 230 yard
3-wood on the first hole of the Washington Masters, and his team never looked
back. The double eagle propelled the team of Chris Tovey, Tom Zittrich, Monz
Hahn, and Greg Biskey to the 2003 Washington Masters title. Although it
occurred on the first hole, the double eagle proved to be the difference in the
tournament, as the winners finished at 67 (-4). Bogeys on the 5th and 11th
brought them back to the pack, but the champions birdied three of the last four
holes to regain their advantage, making this truly a team effort. Two strokes
back was the team of Mike Abe, Ryan Stowers, Pat O'Brien and Travis Nelson, who
also finished strong with birdies on four of their last six holes and a back
nine 33. The only other team under par was Dan Bauer, Chris Hermsen, Dan
Marshall and Mike Boone with a 70.
A Double Eagle (also known as an Albatross) is more rare than a hole-in-one, and
this shot ranks as the most impressive single shot in Washington Masters
history. Chris hit both shots to preserve his spot in Washington Masters lore.
The Pink Ball Challenge went to Lance Takehara, Randy Hagen, Bert Dewell and Amy Eng. The Pink Shirt winners shot an 89 to edge the Abe/ Stowers/ O'Brien/Nelson team by one stroke. One lost pink ball proved to be difference. Four pars and a birdie on the front nine led the winners to the title.
Dan Bauer captured Long Drive honors this year at the 6th hole. Dorothea Fitzsimmons won Women's Long Drive on the same hole. Kevin Denton won Closest to the Pin at #3. Larry Day hit one to within 3½’ at number 7. Mike Abe hit the green at the long 14th and the tournament's youngest member, Michael Tovey was closest on number 17. Thank you to all the participants and congratulations to this year's winners!
