Washington
Masters Completed under Dry Skies
With rain pelting the surrounding areas, the 2002 Washington Masters was completed under dry (if overcast) skies. The rain had just begun to fall when Mike Vose sank a 15-foot putt on the first hole of a putt-off to clinch the 2002 Washington Masters title for the team of Mike Abe, Bert Dewell, Mike Vose and Kevin Hickson.
For the second consecutive year, the lowest scoring scramble team also had the lowest Pink Ball score. The winners chose pink, so a putt off resulted for the Green Shirts. The victorious Pink Ball Challenge team of Dan Bauer, Josh Perry, Pat O’Brien and Jack Hawkins carded an 84 and returned one pink ball to post a record-tying 82. The closest competitors were at 92. This was also the only team to break par in the scramble, as they birdied the final two holes to finish at –2.
Finishing the scramble at even par with the Abe/Dewell/Vose/Hickson team was the team of Eric Blomberg, Dick Stowers, Brent Haugen and Mark Steiner.
Jim Grady captured Long Drive honors this year at the 4th hole (Green Course). Gary Raines won Closest to the Pin at #2 (Blue). Mike Vose hit one to within 7½’ at number 8. Carvin Wilson and Ryan Stowers captured KP prizes on the back (Green) nine (#3 and #6). Thank you to all the participants and congratulations to this year's winners!
