Historic Washington Masters Ends in Playoff

Dick Thompson sank a 15 foot putt on the third hole of a putt-off to clinch the 2001 Washington Masters title for the team of Dick Thompson, Michael Battistelli, Randy Hagen and Brian Tovey. This year's event at Allenmore Golf Course in Tacoma marked the first time since it's inception that the tournament ended in a tie. The victorious team ended the day at -4 tied with the team of Scott Krause, Ryan Stowers, Dan Marshall and Daniel Smith. The sudden death playoff covered three holes on the Allenmore Golf Course practice green as a group of interested spectators looked on. After both teams missed putts on the first two holes, the Krause/ Stowers/Marshall/Smith team missed theirs at the 3rd. Dick Thompson then sealed the win with his clutch stroke.

The victors had five birdies on the day, but a bogey at 17 ended their chance to win the tournament outright. Scott Krause pitched in for an eagle on the par-5 sixth and his team was bogey free to earn their spot in the playoff. Only two other teams broke par, as the wind whipped up on the back nine and made scoring difficult.

For the first time, the Scramble champions also had the lowest Pink Ball score. As stated in the rules, a  team may only win one prize, and   since the champions chose Green, it fell to the next highest pink score. However, another tie resulted, and another putt-off ensued. Dick Stowers sank an 18 foot putt on the first playoff hole to capture the Pink Ball Challenge title for the team of Roger Krause, Dick Stowers, Pete  Bernadelli and Bob Erwin. They  defeated Chris Rinkenberger, Rich Pennewell, Mike Fitzsimmons and Mary Renkert. Mike and Mary put in a valiant effort, but were handicapped because their teammates had already departed.

Pink Ball scores were higher than usual, with the champions coming in at 93 (the scramble champions shot 90). Sixteen of 32 pink balls made  their way back to the clubhouse.

Mike Abe and Mary Renkert captured Long Drive honors this year at the 17th hole. Scott Krause won Closest to the Pin at #2 with a shot to 15".  Noel Martin won the prize at #8, Roger Krause at #12, and Lance Takehara at the tricky 16th.  Thank you to all the participants and congratulations to  this year's winners!
