64 Enjoy Fun and Sun at 2000 Washington Masters

On a day in which the conditions at the Augusta Masters were winter like (35 degrees and windy), sixty-four golfers enjoyed beautiful weather at the Washington Masters, held at Lake Wilderness Golf Course. The shotgun start allowed all players to tee off at 1:00pm and take full advantage of the warm, spring temperatures.

The team of Lance Takehara, Mick Tovey, Mike Fitzsimmons, and Terri Tovey captured the Green Shirts with a six under par 64. The victors had no bogeys during their round, which was slow to get started but featured a stretch of three birdies in four holes to begin their back nine. Two teams tied for second place at 66. The team of Shawn Tovey, Phil Radcliffe, Don Zimmerman, and Dan Oczkewicz got to –5 on their 16^th hole, but a late bogey derailed their run at the title. Mike Cutler, Bert Dewell III, Greg Biskey and Daniel Smith made five consecutive threes and were –4 after eleven holes, but played the last seven holes at even par.

The Pink Ball Champions were Kevin Denton, Dave Bartz, Steve Denton, and Cheryl Denton who turned in a stunning 83, returning both pink balls and winning by four strokes. Team Denton started with back-to-back pars, and closed with three pars in their final four holes. The team of Brian Palosi, Bryce Zimmerman, Mark McIlwain and Karen Martelli made a back nine charge with a 41, but returned with no pink balls and finished second.

Noel Martin won Men’s Long Drive, while Jill Christ won Women’s Long Drive. Dan Bauer captured closest to the pin on Number 7, Dave Schmidt on #8, Stan Elkins on #15 and Brian Palosi on #16.
